Maplewood Redevelopment

WPD is leading the landscape design and the municipal review process for the 17-acre Maplewood Graduate and Professional Student Housing Project. This proposed mixed-use development of residential, community, and retail space revitalizes an existing housing complex to meet the housing needs of graduate and professional students at Cornell. WPD worked closely with municipal staff to draft the form-based code Planned Development Zone language for the site. WPD developed the design of an interconnected network of public and private open spaces. Site design focus areas include the centrally located "mews" gardens and a main entry plaza. Landscape connections to an existing public access walking trail were strengthened as part of this design, with improved plantings in the adjacent redesigned bioretention gardens. Additional site design areas include a new playground, forested walking trails. This project is a hallmark of medium-scale integrated site planning and design. Our colleagues for this work are Torti Galas + Partners Architecture and STREAM Collaborative Architecture + Landscape Architecture dpc.
